TRAVELING TO VIRGIN GORDA

Direct Flights to the British Virgin Islands: Routes from the USA and Beyond
Are you looking to fly to the British Virgin Islands? You can take direct flights from the USA via Miami to Beef Island or from Puerto Rico to Beef Island and Virgin Gorda. These routes land at Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS), the primary gateway to the BVI.
Travelers from Canada, Europe, or South America can also reach the British Virgin Islands by connecting through major Caribbean hubs like Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Antigua, or St. Maarten. Additionally, the BVI has two other airports: Virgin Gorda's Taddy Bay Airport (VIJ) and Anegada’s Auguste George Airport (NGD).
Enjoy seamless travel to the BVI with these convenient air connections!
*Taxes / Departure Tax: A $10/pp environmental tax exists. If you're coming by ferry, that's the only new one. There are a couple of extra $ for cruising permits for ferries and private * IF YOU ARE FLYING FROM THE UNITED STATES ON A MAJOR AIRLINE YOU WILL NEED TO BOOK TO:
(SJU) SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO OR ST. THOMAS, HERE YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE A SEPARATE FLIGHT TO VG, TADDY BAY AIRPORT (VIJ).
If you land on (EIS) Beef Island, Tortola - Here you must take a Ferry from Beef Island to Virgin Gorda with Speedy's. Check the ferry schedules with Speedy's and make sure you fly early because you don't want to be stranded on Beef Island. Customs and Immigration take some time at this airport! We always recommend flying directly to Virgin Gorda! You will save time and sometimes money! Cheaper options can end up being very expensive with delays, canceled flights from more affordable companies, weather ferry delays, or cancellations…
If you stay in Spanish Town, Mahoe Bay, Nail Bay, The Baths, or Guavaberry Spring, the Speedy's ferry will take you to Spanish Town. Go to Speedy's office in the airport, they have a courtesy shuttle, they will drive you to Speedy's dock. You can pay for the ticket ferries on the ferry. I recommend you to write an email to info@speedysbvi.com and tell them when you land, how many people you are, and that you need the courtesy shuttle and to be guided to the dock. It is a 5 minutes walk but I am sure you don't want to walk under the Sun! Buy a round-trip ticket, it is cheaper. You don't need a date, just the ticket! Bring your Round Trip ticket to Speedy's and receive $5 off with Speedy's Jeep Rentals! You need a car in VG so it is better if you land early during the day.
OR
(STT) US Virgin Island St. Thomas and take a one-hour ferry ride to Road Town Harbour or a direct ferry to Virgin Gorda (but it's not every day). The ferry depot is a short 10-minute taxi ride from the airport (you have taxis waiting) and the ferries run frequently, so no need to book in advance. To avoid a BVI Turnover Saturday travel experience plan to arrive at the airport more than three hours before your scheduled departure time. This may seem extreme, but it's not. If you're taking the one-hour "fast" ferry back to St. Thomas, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to account for delays that can last several hours. Then take a quick taxi to the airport. Even if you arrive 59 minutes before your flight, you will be told you're too late, and they'll give up your seat.
FERRY TO VIRGIN GORDA
If you are traveling to Virgin Gorda (VIJ) your hotel, resort, or villa will guide you to make sure that charter flights or ferry service will be available if you arrive after 4 pm. It's very important to check the ferry schedule although you can always book a private ride with Speedy's. Otherwise, plan to spend a night in Tortola before arriving at Virgin Gorda. Boat charters can be arranged via St. Thomas, Road Town, or Beef Island. St. Thomas to Virgin Gorda ferry in 90 minutes! Every Saturday!

Intercaribbean is one of the WORSE airlines, they don’t even know when they cancel flights, don’t call the passengers and basically, if you call them for an emergency they can charge you more from $100 to $200 per call, cheap things become expensive. We don’t recommend them at all. REVIEWS HERE

PETS & TRAVEL POLICY BVI
Unless your pet is entering the British Virgin Islands from a country considered to be rabies-controlled, your pet will need a rabies titer test no sooner than 30 days after the second rabies vaccination. Samples must be processed at approved laboratories.
Your pet needs to have a microchip. You have to first get a titre test. This tests for antibodies for rabies. It takes about 6 weeks to get results back and the test is good for 1 year. You also need some shots that your dog might not already have, an import permit, and a health certificate. The health certificate is complicated because not only does it need to be signed by a USDA-accredited vet (check to see that your vet is accredited) it also then has to be overnighted to the USDA vet to sign and endorse and that document gets sent back to you. The health certificate is good for 30 days but most airlines want a health certificate dated within 10-14 days making the turnaround tight if you are using the USDA-certified health certificate. My suggestion is to have your vet do 2 health certificates…1 to send to the USDA vet and send that within 30 days and then one dated 10 days from departure. Here is the website to get more information.

Effective July 14, 2021, the CDC is temporarily suspending (stopping) dog imports from countries classified as high-risk for rabies. The suspension includes U.S.-origin pet dogs returning to the U.S. from any high-risk rabies country. Learn more about the CDC's dog import suspension.
The information, requirements, and websites posted below are the most current known to APHIS.
An import permit is required to send a pet to the British Virgin Islands. The import permit will outline the specific requirements your pet must meet to travel to the British Virgin Islands. An APHIS-endorsed health certificate IS required PRIOR to applying for an import permit. A rabies titer IS REQUIRED for the import permit application. These requirements (e.g., vaccinations, tests, and treatments) must be recorded on the export health certificate
Agricultural Officers will conduct animal quarantine duties for the British Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture, which has an office at the Terrance B. Lettsome Airport. For pets arriving by sea, the Department requires 24-hour notice of arrival to ensure that appropriate arrangements can be made for the inspection of relevant papers.

Cruising Permits:
$4 per person/per day for non-BVI-based charter yachts (year-round).
$2 per person/per day for BVI based yachts during winter and
$.75 per person/per day during the summer season.
Cruising permits are issued at Customs and are only valid for a specific charter period.
On approaching BVI during daylight, proceed directly to a Port of Entry and clear immigration controls. Yachts arriving outside of business hours must fly the Q flag and register with Immigration on the next business day. It is advisable to contact Immigration in advance if you are likely to arrive at night. No persons may go ashore until the yacht has been cleared nor may it enter a marina unless an agent has been employed.
Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to heavy fines or imprisonment. Also, ensure that all your paperwork is on a date as there are heavy fines if any is found to be out of date.
Normal business hours are 08:30 to 16:30 (Monday-Friday) and 08:30 to 12:30 (Saturday), but they do vary at different ports. See the individual port pages for more details.
Clearance outside normal working hours incurs additional charges. Call Customs at 284-494-3475 and Immigration at 284-494-3701 ext. 4700 to make after-hours arrangements.
Because space at jetties at the Ports of Entry (see bottom of page) is limited, vessels are allowed to anchor in the harbor before Clearing in.
Ship's papers, passports, and last clearance must be shown, and an inward manifest and/or outward manifest, and crew list completed.
It should be noted that the British Virgin Islands and the US Virgin Islands require full Customs clearance out and in when sailing between them. If, however, your stay is short, you may be able to clear in and out at the same time.
Private boats are automatically given up to 30 days to cruise around the BVI. Recently (Feb 2015) some officials in some ports have been charging private yachts a fee of $1/foot/day. Cruisers have suggested that having paperwork showing that you have not previously been charged this fee will allow you to avoid it. However, according to the BVI Ports Authority's own statement, it currently should not be charged at all. See the 'Fees' section below.
A cruising permit is required for all charter yachts cruising in the BVI.
If wishing to use a day mooring in a National Park, then a permit must be purchased when clearing in.
A recreational fishing permit must also be obtained if planning to fish. See Fisheries Department Tel: +284 494 5681
NOTE: Travel between the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands requires clearance in and out. It is sometimes possible, for short stays, to clear in and out at the same time.

Because jetty space is limited, vessels are allowed to anchor in the harbor before making their Customs entry. You may not proceed to a marina until you have cleared your yacht unless you are using a Ship’s Agent. No one may go ashore if you arrive after hours. You must raise your yellow flag. Permission may be sought in advance from Customs and Immigration for late arrival by calling one of the ports of entry. Marina operators should ensure that vessels tied up at their marinas have been duly entered at Customs and Immigration. Only the Captain is required to effect the clearance procedures. The following documents are required:
Clearance document from the previous port
Ship’s papers
Valid Passports for all crew and passengers.
The US Government requires that all US citizens traveling to the Caribbean must have valid passports to enable them to re-enter the USA. Some nationals require BVI visas. Refer to VISAS.
You will be required to complete a Customs control document. For each person on board, both a green Customs declaration form and Immigration cards are required. If you are a charter yacht and taking fee-paying passengers aboard whilst in the BVI, you need to buy a Cruising Permit and a National Parks Mooring Permit. This permit allows you to use any N.P. dive or snorkel mooring buoy in the BVI for your yacht or dinghy (these moorings take yachts up to 60 ft). Yachts visiting the BVI for the first time in the year will be required to pay an Annual Tonnage fee when clearing Customs. This fee is based on the yacht’s net tonnage. If the vessel is to remain in the BVI for more than one month, there is a fee of $200 to temporarily import the yacht for up to one year.
Vessels traveling between the BVI and USVI must clear out of BVI waters at one of the ports of entry and clear into US waters either at Cruz Bay, St John, or Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas. Yachts over 300 gross tons must send an Advance Notice of Arrival to the US Coastguard 24 hours prior to arrival or they will not be admitted into the USVI. Non-USA crew or guests must have the requisite visas. For yachtsmen already in the Caribbean, US visas can be obtained from the US Embassy in Barbados after first obtaining an appointment.
